Description: Healer, teacher, vocalist, musician, composer, poet, and dancer, Murshida VA discovered healing sound in 1991 when a series of strangers approached her, insisting that she was meant to use her voice to heal. Although she had been a performing artist and was, at that time, in graduate school for mental health counseling, she had never heard of healing sound. Since VA was, also, at that time, suffering from a chronic illness, she felt there was nothing to lose (and everything to gain), and so, began a series of experiments, using her voice, a Nepali Shaman's drum, and a 12-string guitar. For more than a year, she sang and sounded for several hours each day. When her symptoms would abate, she simply repeated what she had been doing. This self-created practice not only catalyzed a profound healing of her body, heart, and soul, it also opened her to mystical states of consciousness-- ultimately leading to Intiatory training in the lineages of Pir-O-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan, the traditions in which she is now a teacher and guide. In 1992, she began sharing her healing sound experiences publically in performance. Since this time, Murshida VA has made vital contributions to individuals, communities, businesses, prisons, domestic violence shelters, treatment centers, government agencies, schools, and universities.  She has pioneered sound healing in the internationally acclaimed, Shands Hospital Arts-in-Medicine Program, the Mind-Body Medical Institute of Harvard University (MBMI), Lowell Correctional (the largest maximum security women's prison in the United States) and several domestic violence shelters. She has been conference faculty for the MBMI and is currently annual conference faculty for the International Women's Writer's Guild. Murshida VA has composed and performed as lead vocalist for Jawole Willa Jo Zollar's "Urban Bush Women" and is currently engaged, with Actress-Poet, Stephanie Alston-Nero, in a collaboration entitled "Kiss Me on My Face of God", devoted to healing the historic wounds slavery has left on the soul of humanity. Her poetry has been published in "The Journal for Humanistic Education and Development" as well as several small press literary magazines, and her vocal compositions have been commissioned to be played for the dead at Auschwitz and Dakau, and by Susyn Reeves, author of "Choose Peace and Happiness". Murshida VA has released, to date, four CDs of original music, poetry, and experimental sound recordings. Specializing in trauma recovery and soul energy restoration, Murshida VA maintains a private practice while also teaching workshops and performing throughout the United States.
