A historical perspective by Jonathan Goldman
The Sound Healers Association (formally New England Sound Healers) met monthly from the beginning of 1982 through 1989. It’s purpose: to present monthly meetings, distribute information to an interested public and network others involved in the field of using sound and music as tools for wellness.
Several years ago, I was fortunate to come across a long missing manuscript that among other things, contained the monthly letters I had sent out announcing upcoming meetings and reporting on past meetings. I have taken the liberty of extracting the essence of these letters and putting them in a chronological order below. I think they are fascinating for several reasons:
First, these letters chronicle the events that occurred during these meetings. For those of you who may have not been a part of the sound healing awakening that occurred in the early 1980’s, you will find the notes of these meetings most illuminating. Even back then, awareness of sound healing was happening–perhaps not in as large a level as today, but as you’ll see, extraordinary work and teachings were taking place. In fact, there is very little with regard to the healing and transformational uses of sound that was not manifesting in some form at this time. As I’ve recently found through listening to some of the re-discovered recordings of these meetings, there was actually information and technology at that time which somehow has managed to disappear from the current sound healing psyche. Those of you who listen to these recordings in our “Listening Library” on this website will understand what I mean.
Second, you’ll really see how a small grassroots energy form began to expand over the years. In 1982, we began with perhaps two dozen people. Interest in the group began to grow. More and more people expressed interest in sound and began to attend our meetings. Internationally renowned teachers, scientists, musicians, mystics and healers came to our meetings and freely donated their time and energy to share information with us. What an extraordinary and blessed time that was!
In l984, we became New England Sound Healers (NESH), an organization dedicated to education and awareness of the uses of sound and music as tools for healing. In February of l988, we officially changed our name to Sound Healers Association (SHA) to reflect the truly global scope of sound healing. Since that time many different symposiums and meetings focusing on the uses of sound and music for healing have since occurred. In 1995 the first International Sound Healers Directory was published. In 2003, we had our first Online Sound Healers Directory. Now, in 2006, we are reworking our website, with more exciting additions and creating more of the Sound Healing Center that we always envisioned.
Lastly, I’d like to suggest that the meetings of the Sound Healers Association represent a matrix—a blueprint, if you like, for how to create an organization truly dedicated to the expanding awareness of sound and music for healing and transformation. If any of you are interested in starting your own organizations or starting a satellite branch of the Sound Healers, I believe that modeling these past very successful meetings would certainly be a good way to begin.
The following are the first three letters as written in their entirety. After that follow excerpts from many years of Sound Healer Letters. Please, if you are so inclined, read them. There is an enormous amount of information and history to be found here. I trust you will appreciate them. May you enjoy this energy that continues to resonate after all these years.
THE SHA LETTERS

Dear Friends:
Hi! I’m trying to organize a coherent group of people within the Boston area who are interested in exploring any and all aspects of healing with sound and music. This group would meet on a fairly regular and frequent basis, perhaps twice a month or more.
Healing with sound and music is an important aspect of the esoteric medical arts–unconventional healing, if you prefer–and it is necessary and vital that there be a way of exchanging ideas, information and experience with each other. That is why I would like to help organize N.E.S.H.–New England Sound Healers–this group I mention in the beginning of this letter. I offer my house as a meeting place for this group–a place where we could explore healing with sound and music together.

Dear Friends:
February 7, a Sunday night has been suggested as the first meeting of N.E.S.H., at 5 pm. If you are interested in joining together that night, please call to confirm. There are many people who need rides and I would like to arrange as many of these as possible. If we could bring food in a pot luck style situation, I’m sure it would work out fine. Also, any instruments that come with you will be great too.
I have spoken to many of you before, but am just sending this letter as a more formal realization of N.E.S.H. Please call also, if you have any questions and ideas regarding this. This letter is just the first step and the organization of New England Sound Healers needs a lot of help to exist. Just remember though the amazing things can be accomplished by group toning and sharing. Also, a pot luck dinner’s kind of fun too!

Dear Friends,
On Sunday, Feb. 7, the first meeting of NESH took place here in Lexington. The meeting began at 5 pm. The first two hours were spent in discussion and eating, with all of us sharing pot luck food and thought. The next two hours were dedicated to playing music, meditating and chanting. Our evening ended with a brief talk about possible future plans and activities for N.E.S.H., including the arrangement of a next meeting.
In an attempt to increase information and knowledge among us about various aspects of healing with music and sound, each meeting of N.E.S.H. (besides featuring the activities mentioned in the above paragraph) will offer a half hour talk by one of our regular participants or a special guest on a topic of their expertise and choosing. If you have a particular expertise in music, sound or healing or know someone who does, please start thinking about helping us learn and grow in that area by planning a talk. For our next meeting, Sam McClellan, who works with acupressure and Chinese diagnostic techniques, will talk on “The 5 Elements of Music.

March 1982, Sam McClellan “The Five Elements of Music”
The second NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday night, March 7th. Sam McClellan gave an excellent talk on “The 5 Elements of Music” followed by a demonstration of the practical application of this knowledge through use of a particular cassette of music which he had created. Sam tested an individual through kinesiology prior to listening to this music, and then afterwards and found that they tested stronger than before. This was a real and valid demonstration of one of the healing effects of music, and was appreciated by all who were present.
April 1982, Satya Ambrose “Music and Oriental Diagnosis”
Our third N.E.S.H. meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, April 4. Acupuncturist Satya Ambrose gave a most enlightening talk and demonstration on various aspects of her work involving music and acupunture, including use of different pulses for diagnosis and toning techniques for body scanning and healing.
May 1982, Roger Davidson “Language and Vibration”
Our fourth N.E.S.H. meeting took place here in Lexington, on Sunday, May 9th, l982. Our guest speaker for that night was Roger Davidson, a composer with a Masters in Music, who has been researching the relationship between vibration, sound and meaning. Roger’s talk “Language and Vibration” will include the unveiling of a new language which he has developed.
June 1982, Open Forum
Our Sunday, June 6th, l982 the N.E.S.H. meeting took place here in Lexington. At 8 o’clock that night, after an initial period of singing and playing instruments, the group began vocal healings for those present and absent, employing toning techniques. Special emphasis was given to healing energies for the Earth.
July 1982, Priscilla King, R.N. “Healing”
The most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on July l7th, l982. Our guest speaker that evening was Priscilla King, R.N. Priscilla is regional director of the American Holistic Nurses Association, a staff member of the Portland Holistic Center for Health & Education, and a healer who works as a channel for touch therapy, present and past life time regression, hypnosis, nutritional counseling and music more. Her talk that night encompassed many topics, including channeling healing energy. Priscilla stressed the importance of using sound and music for the healing process, particularly the use of pre-recorded music which she felt could reach and help countless more people than an individual could.
August 1982, Jonathan Goldman, “Harmonic and Overtone Singing”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, August lst, l982. As the guest speaker for the evening, I spoke on “Harmonics and Overtone Singing”. I played rare tapes of overtone singing from around the world, and then after a demonstration of “multiphonic” vocal techniques, the group participated in producing overtones. A discussion followed on the use of harmonics and overtones as a healing tool.
September 1982 Devorah, “Chants to the Goddess Energy”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, September l2, l982. Our guest speaker for the evening was Devorah Peck, who works in holistic healing in New York City, using music and sound, as well as crystals and flower essences in her practice. Devorah shared with us some of her knowledge of esoteric healing, and in particular, use of “Chants to the Goddess Energy” from Native American, Hindu, Hawaiian, Buddhist and other traditions.
October 1982, Randall McClellan, Ph.D. “The Philosophy and Basic Principles of Healing with Sound and Music”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, October 3rd, l982. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Dr. Randall McClellan, who will speak on “The Philosophy and Basic Principles of Healing with Sound and Music”. Randall, from the Amherst area, teaches the only college level course on healing with sound and music in the United States and is a student of Northern Indian Singing.
November 1982 Sarah Benson & Janet Fuchs “Song of the Soul”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, November 7th l982. Our guest speaker for the evening was Sarah Benson, whose work with sound and music for healing purposes is well known in the New England area. Sarah, a musician, poet, teacher and member of the performing group Sumitra, will talk about her work with toning, vocal scanning and chakra sounds and explore the power of “The Song of the Soul”.
December 1982 Ted Levin, Ph.D. “Harmonic Music and Other Harmonic Phenomenon”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, December 5th, l982. Our guest speaker for the evening was Ted Levin, Ph.D. Dr. Levin has traveled to esoteric parts of Asia in order to study indigenous singing techniques. He is a member of the Harmonic Choir from New York which performs in concert using harmonics and overtones. Ted is on the faculty of the music department at Mount Holyoke College. He spoke on “Harmonic Music & Other Harmonic Phenomenon”, which included demonstrations of harmonic singing. Ted also played tapes of various types of harmonic singing from Mongolia and Tibet as well as part of a performance of the Harmonic Choir recorded in France.
January 1983 Open Forum
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, January 9th, l983. Many people joined in this celebration of the Sound Current, sharing food, conversation and song together. This meeting marked the lst year anniversary of the NESH group and was a very joyous occasion.
February 1982 Steven Schatz “Music and Imagery”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, February 6th, l983. Our guest speaker for the evening was Steven Schatz, founding director of the Synthesis Educational Foundation. A pioneer practitioner and teacher in the field of Music and Imagery, Steven has given lectures and workshops throughout the United States. Steven spoke on “Music, Imagery and Psychosynthesis”, in which he told of the development and use of music and imagery as a healing tool in his work. He played a small taped portion of one of his sessions with a client. This tape was an inspiring example of this work. Steven gave suggestions on how music and imagery could be practically applied by anyone for transformation and growth.
March 1983 Kay Mora “Earth Changes”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, March 6th, l983. Our guest speaker for the evening was Kay Mora. Kay is a well known psychic, medium and healer who has lectured and given workshops throughout much of the United States and Canada. She is currently living in Florida where she appears on a TV show and teaches Psychic Awareness at Jacksonville Jr. College. During the summer, Kay lives in the Rangeley Maine area, where she conducts workshops and teaches at the University of Maine. Kay spoke on many aspects of her work, including, “Psychic Healing” and also information regarding the use of sound and music for healing which had come through her in trance sessions held several days before.
April 1983 Dan Baer, Ph.D. “Peruvian Whistling Vessels”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, April 10th, l983. Our guest speaker for the evening Dr. Daniel Baer, Professor of Psychology at Boston College, spoke on “Peruvian Whistling Vessels”. These vessels, which were found buried with the mummies in Peru, are said to be at least 2,500 years old; and while their true origins and use are unknown, Dan Baer proposed many interesting thoughts about them. The group then took part in blowing copies of the vessels which Dan had brought, and the psycho- acoustic effects were felt by all. This sounding of the vessels was done in two parts and lasted for nearly an hour, with the second sounding being a healing for the Earth.
May 1983 John Beaulieu, Ph.D. “The Relationship of Interval Theory and Its Application to the Nervous System”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, May 8th, l983. Our guest speaker for the evening was Dr. John Beaulieu. John is a composer, pianist, music therapist, naturopath and director of the Polarity Wellness Center of New York. His work in the field of sound and music for healing is internationally known. His topic was “The Relationship of Interval Theory and Its Application to the Nervous System and Cranial Mechanism Through Use of Tuning Forks” and included demonstrations using tuning forks to affect the Primary Respiratory Rate.
June 1983 Barbara Hero “The Shape of Sound”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, June 12, 1983. Our guest speaker for the evening was Barbara Hero. Barbara, an artist, mathematician and musician spoke on her use of the Pythagorean formula known as the Lambdoma Diagram whose mathematical functions with the overtone series are of primary importance in her work. Barbara showed slides, played music which she had created based on the Lambdoma, and with the help of Robert Foulkrod, demonstrated the “Shape of Sound” through use of a laser and scanner system. NESH members were able to try this laser and scanner system and make sounds into a microphone which were transformed via the laser into various shapes projected onto a screen.
July 1983 Open Forum
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, July l7th. This meeting was an open forum, allowing members an opportunity to share sound and music with each other. The group sang and played music and then participated in a toning and healing circle.
August 1983 Open Forum
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, August 2lst, l983. The group sang and played and then took part in a sounding of Peruvian Whistling Vessels. Afterwards, we participated in a toning and healing circle.
September 1983 Don Campbell “The Kaballah of Sound”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Saturday, September 24th, l983. Our guest speaker for the evening was Don G. Campbell. From Texas, Don is a muscian, educator and author of INTRODUCTION TO THE MUSICAL BRAIN. An internationally acknowledged authority on utilizing music for education development, he is the musical assistant to Dr. Jean Houston. Don spoke on his work with music and the brain, as well as “The Kaballah of Sound” which included information on how the Tree of Life related to harmonics, healing and possibly the brain.
October 1983 Randall McClellan “Further Philosophy and Basic Principles of Healing with Sound and Music”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Saturday, October 22nd, l983. Our guest speaker for the evening was Dr. Randall McClellan, musician, teacher and author of THE HEALING FORCES OF MUSIC: HISTORY, THEORY AND PRACTICE. Randall teaches the only college level course on healing with sound and music, at Hampshire College. He spoke one year ago and returned to provide further information on “The Philosophy and Basic Principles of Healing with Sound and Music II”.
November 1983 Sadhana Kalpana Mazumder “Healing and the Universal Sound”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, Nov. l3th, l983. Our guest speaker for the evening was Sadhana Kalpana Mazumder. From Calcutta, Sadhana is a teacher and performer of Hindustani vocal music. Sadhana began her presentation by singing and evening raga, accompany herself on tambura. She then talked on “Healing and the Universal Sound”, which explored the relationship of Indian music to the maintenance of spiritual and personal well being. Sadahana included information on how different tonal centers affect different people.
December 1983 Kay Gardner “Modes, Scales and Their Affect”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, December llth, l983. Our guest speaker for the evening was Kay Gardner. Kay is a musician and composer from Maine. She travels extensively throughout the United States giving lectures and workshops on the healing effects of music. She is currently applying her theories based on Pythagorean and Hindu traditions to the composition of “A Rainbow Path”, a major work coordinating sound and color meditation for healing. Kay spoke on “Modes, Scales and Their Affect”. She talked on this subject as well as how rhythm, melody, harmony and their intent affected the healing qualities of music. Kay told us of the importance of the harmonic series in her work and demonstrated an instrument she had made which utilized a scale based on the notes found in the fourth octave of the harmonic series.
January 1984 Allaudin Mathieu “Experiencing Musical Structure”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, January l5th, l984. Our guest speaker for the evening was Allaudin Mathieu. Allaudin is a renowned composer, pianist and teacher of music. He has taught at San Francisco Conservatory and is the founder of the Sufi Choir. He currently lives in the San Francisco area, where he is recording his third album of piano music. In his work with awareness of music, Allaudin emphasizes that the source of healing is experience, not idea, and that knowledge of musical systems of healing must be balanced with realization of the effects of music. He spoke on “Experiencing Musical Structure. Allaudin talked about fundamentals of sound waves, the harmonic series and musical ratios. He had those in attendance sing various musical ratios in order to better understand the effects created by experiencing intervals.
February 1984 Sarah Benson “Toning”
Our most recent NESH meeting place place here in Lexington on Sunday, February l9th, l984. This marked the 2nd anniversary of NESH meetings. Our guest speaker for the evening was Sarah Benson, whose energy and teaching have been a major force in the creation of NESH. She has given workshops on the uses of sound and music for healing throughout New England. She has performed and recorded with On Wings of Song and Sumitra. She is co-founder of the Heart Sound Center for Music and Health. She spoke on “Toning”, the use of the voice, with the intention and energy of love as a healing instrument. She worked with NESH group for several hours, showing us exercises and techniques on the use of the voice for stress release, body alignment, centering body scanning and chakra sounding.
March 1984 Dr. Peter Guy Manners, “Potential Fields (Esoteric and Natural and Their Effect on Man”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Saturday, March 3lst, l984 at the Theosophical Society in Boston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Dr. Peter Guy Manners, D.O., Ph.D., L.B.C.P., D.D. Dr. Manners lives and works in Worcestershire England, where he has been engaged since l96l in research into the effects and use of sound for healing. Dr. Manners is considered one of the world’s foremost authorities on this subject. He is the inventor of the Cymatic Instrument, which uses the direct application of sound on the body for healing. This instrument has been successfully used in clinical situations for treatment of many varied types of diseases and disorders. Dr. Manners spoke on “Potential Fields (Esoteric and Natural) and Their Effect on Man”, which included information on cymatics (wave phenomenon), sound and vibratory patterns, harmonics and the creation of matter by sound.
April 1984 Richard Boerstler “The Reduction of Stress and Anxiety through Meditation, Mantra and Sound”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, April 29th, l984. Our guest speaker for the evening was Richard W. Boerstler. Richard is a practicing thanatoogist and psychotherapist in Massachusetts and author of LETTING GO–A HOLSITIC APPROACH TO LIVING AND DYING. He spoke on “The Reduction of Stress and Anxiety through Meditation, Mantra and Sound”. Richard shared techniques of meditation, including the use of the “AHAA” sound of the 5th chakra, as well as breathing for deep relaxation, which has been successfully in hospitals and hospice work.
May 1984 Bruce Paley, Ph.D. “The Effects of Music Components on Hemispheric Asymmetry and Emotional Responses by Musicians and Non-Musicians”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Saturday, May 26th, l984 in Lexington. Our guest speaker was Bruce Paley, Ph.D. Bruce is a professor at Tufts University in the Music and Psychology Department. He spoke his research on “The Effects of Musical Components (Rhythm, Temp, Syncopation and Major and Minor Modality) on Hemispheric Asymmetry and Emotional Responses by Musicians and Non-Musicians”. Bruce talked on this work, new information on brain laterality and the perception and cognition of music.

September 1984 NESH BENEFIT CONCERT
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, September 23rd, l984 at the Old Cambridge Baptist Church. It was “The NESH Benefit Concert” featuring Sarah Benson & Heart Sound (Terra Desch, Della Grigsby and Sharmane Simard), Sam McClellan & Friends (Anna McClellan, Lynn Lovel and Ray Vakel) and the “Celestial Vibrations” of Laraaji’s zither and synthesizer. A 90 minute cassette of this concert is available from Spirit Records with all proceeds going to NESH.
October 1984 Don Campbell “New Ways of Listening; Brain, Body and Ear”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, October 2lst, l984. Our guest speaker for the evening was Don Campbell, internationally known music educator and author of INTRODUCTION TO THE MUSICAL BRAIN. Don talked about “New Ways of Listening; Brain, Body and Ear” which included information about techniques of listening which deal with bone conduction, as well as the body’s gravity. He also spoke on the work of Alfred Tomatis, M.D., whose invention “the Electronic Ear” has been successful in treating learning disabilities such as dyslexia, as well as autism.
November 1984 Laurie Cabot “Words of Power”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place at 20 Rugg Road in Allston on Sunday, November l8th, l984. Our guest speaker for the evening was Laurie Cabot, “the Official Witch of Salem”. Laurie is a well known psychic, teacher and healer who has been working with the science of witchcraft for the past l4 years. She has her own radio show in Boston and has been featured on the television show “In Search of” and in “National Geographic”. Laurie is currently wiring a book on the subject of PRACTICAL MAGIC for Para Research. She spoke on “Words of Power”; the use of chants and incantations in the science of magic. Laurie talked on the power of words as tools for visualization and manifestation and stressed the importance of using positive language in our daily lives. She then led the NESH group in a while light meditation to aid the African famine.
December 1984 John Buttrick, Ph.D. “Music is More than Music”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, December l6th, l984 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was John Buttrick, Ph.D. John is a Professor of Music at MIT and a performing concert pianist. He has performed and recorded throughout the United States. He has worked extensively with John Diamond, M.D. on the use of kinesiology to explore the power of music and its effect on us and has worked with many performers utilizing these techniques to clear blocks and increase creativity. His lecture was entitled “Music is More than Music”. John spoke on the aspirational and communional vitality of music and how this vitality is transmitted to the mind, body and spirit. He used kinesiology to demonstrate how different music could strengthen or weaken us. John spoke of the natural pulses of the body and how rhythms in music can work with these pulses.
January 1985 Jonathan Goldman “The Harmonic Effect”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place here in Lexington on Sunday, January 20th, l985. Our guest speaker for the evening was me, Jonathan Goldman. My talk was entitled “The Harmonic Effect”; the use of harmonic Singing as a tool for meditation, self-transformation and healing. Drawing upon information found in my “Awakening the Lost Chord”, I examined metaphysical schools of thought regarding harmonics and their relationship to the cosmos, as well as the potential application of this knowledge in new frontiers of healing with sound and music. I also explored the relationship between quartz crystals and sonics and gave a demonstration of “crystal singing” which uses harmonic singing and toning to work with the energies of quartz crystals for balance and healing.
February 1985 Molly Scott “Sound for Power, Singing for Joy”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, February l7th, l985 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Molly Scott. Molly is a singer, composer, poet and teacher who has been working with sound and healing for the past l0 years. She has founded the musical group Sumitra and released several recordings including “Honor the Earth” and “We Are All One Planet”. Molly currently gives concerts, workshops and lectures throughout the United States focused on issues of peace and personal and planetary connection. She spoke on “Sounding for Power, Singing for Joy” which focused upon the use of sound and song to dissolve deep- seated fears brought about by living in the nuclear world. Molly led the NESH group in several of her songs and in exercises designed to release grief and open us to joy. She also spoke on the use of sound and song to harmonize groups of people and to change consciousness.
March 1985 Paul Temple “Bioresonance and Archarmonic Modulation; Exploration in Sound, Knowledge and Purpose”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, March l0th, l985 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Paul Temple. Paul is a musician and teacher with the Sunray Meditation Society. He is a senior student and teaching assistant with Dhyanai Ywahoo, who carries the knowledge of sacred sound from the ancient traditions of the Tsalgi (Cherokee) people. Paul spoke on “Bioresonance and Archarmonic Modulation; Exploration in Sound, Knowledge and Purpose”. His talk focused upon understanding ourselves as instruments in a time of great harmonic change and our purpose as carriers of the sacred knowledge of sound to heal and transform. Paul’s presentation included healing circle meditations and Buddhist and Native American chanting.
April 1985 Devorah “Inner Sounds and Vocal Transformation in Tibetan Buddhist and Kaballistic Traditions”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, April 2lst, l985. Our guest speaker for the evening was Devorah. Devorah is a singer, guide, healer and therapist. She is the director of the Earthsong Institute for Music and Consciousness in New York. She has studied with Tibetan Buddhists and with the Hassidic teacher Shlomo Carlesbach for 8 years. She spoke on “Inner Sounds and Vocal Transformation in the Tibetan Buddhist and Kabalistic Traditions”. She talked about the Tibetan Buddhist use of sound and mantra to effect the chakras and transform the emotional nature. She presented a Kabalistic map of sounds from the Tree of Life in the Jewish mystical Tradition. Devorah shared songs and chants from both the Tibetan Buddhist and Kabalistic traditions for healing the body and the mind.
May 1985 Steven Halpern, Ph.D. “A New Vision of the Healing Arts”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, May l9th, l985 at the Old Cambridge Baptist Church. Our guest speaker for the evening was Steven Halpern, Ph.D. A musician, writer and teacher, Steven is a world renowned pioneer and acknowledge authority on the uses of sound and music for well-being. He is the author of TUNING THE HUMAN INSTRUMENT and SOUND HEALTH. He is the creator of many recordings of “anti-frantic” music, including “Spectrum Suite”, Starborn Suite”, “Comfort Zone” and Eastern Peace”. From California, Steven travels throughout the United States and Europe giving workshops, lectures and concerts. Steven’s talk for the evening was entitled “A New Vision of the Healing Arts”. He shared his perspectives, experiences and insights into the reality of enhancing our well-being through sound and music. Steven’s talk touched on many subjects, including the use of sound and music for stress reduction, enhancing energy and creativity, accelerated learning and self-healing. He used slides and prerecorded music to emphasize the information and techniques he presented to us. Steven performed beautiful meditational music on the piano as part of his presentation and answered questions from the audience on the uses of sound and music for well-being. Due to response from our questionnaire, we have decided to discontinue our pot luck dinners. We have also decided to use the summer for a break.
September 1985 Sam McClellan “Music of the Five Elements”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, September 29th l985 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Sam McClellan. Sam is an acupressurist and a musician who has created a unique system of music based upon the Oriental medical principles of the Five Elements. His “Music of the Five Elements” series on Spirit Records has received excellent response from listeners, health practitioners and reviewers in YOGA JOURNAL, NEW AGE, NEW FRONTIER and THE BOSTON GLOBE. Sam’s talk was on the “Music of the Five Elements”. Sam spoke on the use of music as a healing modality and how he created music based upon a pre-existing system of healing. He talked on the Five Elements and how this system relates to energy transformation, acupuncture meridians and internal organs. Sam concluded his presentation by answering questions regarding his musical work.
October 1985 Dr. Peter Guy Manners, “New Horizons in Healing with Sound”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, October 27th, l985 at the Theosophical Society in Boston. Our guest speaker was Peter Guy Manners, D.O., Ph.D.. This meeting was the culmination of a series of lectures and workshops which had taken place over the week-end. From Worcestershire England, Dr. Manners is a world renown pioneer in the development of Cymatic Therapy, which uses the direct application of sound on the body for healing. Dr. Manners’ talk was entitled “New Horizons in Healing with Sound”. He spoke on the multi-dimensional approach of using sound in clinical situations for treatment of diseases and disorders. This included the application of Cymatic Therapy to utilize sound as carrier waves for homeopathic remedies as well as the use of this therapy in relation to acupuncture meridians. Along with his continued work with Cymatic Therapy, Dr. Manners is now investigating the potential use of quartz crystals to resonate Cymatic Harmonics for therapeutic situations.
November 1985 John-Paul Curtay, M.D. “Sound, Symbolism and Emotional Healing”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, November l7th, l985 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Jean-Paul Curtay, M.D. Jean-Paul graduated from the University of Paris in l982, completing a first year Psychiatry specialty. At the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute in San Francisco, he started research on the emotional and behavioral changes that occur through vocalization. He has toured throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, giving workshops, lectures and performances on `sound art’ which features the use of body and voice as musical instruments. Jean-Paul spoke on “Sound, Symbolism and Emotional Healing”. He focused on non-verbal ability to achieve emotional wellness through self-created sounds. Jean-Paul led us in exercises combining visualization with sound. He talked on a variety of subjects, including the use of endorphins triggered by sound to create states of pleasure and the phenomena of phonetic symbolism; the correspondence between sounds of speech and images and emotions.
December 1985, Robert Gass, E.D. “Opening the Heart with Sound”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, December l5th, l985 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Robbie Gass, E.D. Robbie is co-founder of the Spring Hill educational community and musical director of the performing group “On Wings of Song”. Her is the founder of the nationally known “Opening the Heart” workshops. Robbie’s presentation was “Opening the Heart with Sound”. His presentation included songs, guided visualization and techniques for expanding healing energy using music.
January 1986 Don Conreaux “The Magic and Power of Bells and Gongs”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, January 26th, l986. Our guest speaker for the evening was Don Conreaux. Don is a massage therapist, yoga teacher and musician. Since l969, he has been working with Spinning Buddha Bells from Burma, which he utilizes to create ‘cosmic reconnection through resonance’. Don’s presentation was “The Magic and Power of Bells and Gongs”. He spoke on the uses of bells, gongs and conch shells to create different states of consciousness for meditation and healing, as well as demonstrating their effect by playing them.

March 1986 Kay Gardner “The 9 Elements of Healing Music”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, March l6th, l986 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Kay Gardner. Kay is a musician and composer from Maine. She is the creator of “A Rainbow Path” which combines her theories based on Pythagorean and Hindu traditions into a major work coordinating sound and color meditation for healing. Kay spoke on “The 9 Elements of Healing Music”. She focused upon how these elements: drone, repetition, rhythm-pulse, harmony, melody, harmonics, form, instrumental color and intent, could be uitlized in the compositional creation of healing music. Kay discussed these elements and played examples of them for illustration.
April 1986 Bojidar Pinek “Hoomi: Magic of the Double Voice”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday April 27th, l986 in Allston. Our guest speaker for evening was Bojidar “Bojo” Pinek. Bojo is a singer, composer and psycho-acoustician from France. He has recently arrived from Europe, where he was extensively involved in the emergence of harmonic singing as an art from. Bojo conducted a harmonically oriented ensemble “Espace Vocaux-Poiesis” in the south of France, where he also give lectures and workshops. He holds Masters Degrees in both Psychology and Neuro-Science and is currently involved in international research projects studying the relationship of the brain to sound. Bojo spoke on “Hoomi: Magic of the Double Voice”. He talked about different types of double voice singing through the world which enable a person to chant chords by using the harmonics of a tone. Bojo illustrated his talk by playing Recorded examples of hoomi techniques from a variety of countries and cultures. He concluded his presentation by giving a short performance of hoomi.
May 1986 Steven Stone “State of the Heart Home Music Reproduction Systems”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, May l8th, l986 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Steven Stone. Steve is a musician, photographer and writer. A member of the NESH Advisory Board and principle in Spirit Music, Steve is a staff writer for “The Absolute Sound” which analyzes and reviews sound reproduction equipment. His talk was entitled “State of the Heart Home Music Reproduction Systems”. Steven presented an overview of the problems and solutions for obtaining the same healing benefits from recorded music as with live music. He focused upon the tools necessary to make music listening a transformational experience, including the effects of tube amplifiers, digital records and compact discs. Steve demonstrated the difference between good and bad reproduction of sound and spoke on the physical and metaphysical realities of this.
September 1986 Don Campbell “Music and Trance”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on September 2lst, l986 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Don Campbell. A musician, recording artist, teacher and consultant in music and psycho-acoustics, Don is the author of INTRODUCTION TO THE MUSICAL BRAIN and creator of “Crystal Meditations”. He spoke on “Music and Trance”. Don examined the definitions of trance and altered states of consciousness, discussing the differences between these states and their relationship to music. He also talk on the practical and ethical uses of trance and music in contemporary society. Don concluded his presentation with slides and music from Bali, describing the use of music in trance and other rituals he observed during his travels there.
October 1986 “Marcia Guntzel “The Uses of Intuition in Vocal Healing”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on October 26th, l986 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Marcia Guntzel. Marcia is a musician, writer and professional singer, active with NESH and the School of Sound. Her presentation was entitled “The Uses of Intuition in Vocal Healing”. Marcia focus upon the empowerment of ourselves as healers through use of the voice and inner guidance in order to allow our innate healing abilities to emerge through the Sound Curent. Her presentation Included songs, toning exercises and a group discussion of intuitional experiences in the healing process.
November 1986 Harlan Sparer, D.C. “The Uses of Sound and Crystals in the Healing Mode”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, November 23rd, l986 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Dr. Harlan Sparer. Harlan is a Doctor of Chiropractice from the New York area, who has studied the art of spiritual healing. He uses sound, crystals, nutrition and herbs in his practice to facilitate healing. Harlan’s talk was on “The Uses of Sound and Crystals in the Healing Mode”. Harlan discussed case histories and methodologies from his practice in which crystals and sound were utilized. In a demonstration with six people at the meeting, Harlan found there was temporary movement of their cranial bones when they were resonated by harmonic singing. It was suggested that the cerebral spinal fluid of the cranium was resonated by this sound, causing movement of the bones.
December 1986 Michael Noll “Astrology and Music”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, December l4th, l986 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Michael Noll. Michael is a musician and astrologer from Salem. His musical recordings include “Windows of Sound”, “Druid Science” and the “Pentagrams” series. Michael’s talk was entitled “Astrology and Music”. He examined relationships between harmonic intervals and astrological charts and discussed theories on this, from Plato to modern day interpretations. Michael demonstrated his work using a synthesizer to play music created from natal charts of people at this meeting. He suggested ways in which these musical interpretations of astrological charts might be utilized for wellness.
January 1987 Sharmane Eve Simard “Music Therapy in the Psychiatric Setting”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, January 25th, l987 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Sharmane Eve Simard, RMT-BC. Sharmane is a singer, musician and composer who has worked as a registered music therapist at the Arbor in Jamaica Plain for the past 9 years. Her talk was entitled “Music Therapy in the Psychiatric Setting”. Her talk covered perspectives in diagnosis, treatment approaches and varied music therapy techniques to meet the needs of clients within a short term psychiatric setting. Sharmane discussed traditional music therapy techniques and their uses as well as new approaches using sound and music for health.
February 1987 John Dumais “An Introduction to Hemi-Sync”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, February 22nd, l987 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was John Dumais. John is a writer and singer from Massachusetts. He is a certified trainer of Hemi-Sync, a patented process developed by Robert A. Monroe to synchronize the left and right hemispheres of the brain and create deep states of consciousness. John’s talk was entitled “An Introduction to Hemi-Sync”. He spoke on the inception and current development of the technology at the Monroe Institute, explaining the process which utilizes auditory beat frequencies to induce hemispheric synchronization. He then had the NESH group experience a live demonstration of Hemi-Sync Sound.
March l987 Jonathan Goldman “Music In Medicine”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, March 22nd, l987 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Jonathan Goldman. I reported on the recent conferences I have attended and lectured at, including the 3rd International Symposium on Music in Medicine Symposium in Germany and the Music & Health Conference in Kentucky. My talk was entitled “Music in Medicine”. It presented an overview of various presentations given at these conferences, including my own work on Harmonic Singing as a tool for wellness. I also suggested ways in which holistic and esoteric approaches to using sound and music for healing might be integrated with traditional scientific and medical approaches to health.
April l987 John Beaulieu, Ph.D. “Voice Energetics and the Five Elements”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, April 26th, l987 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was John Beaulieu, Ph.D. John is a composer, pianist, music therapist, naturopath, director of the Polarity Wellness Network and author of the forthcoming book MUSIC AND SOUND IN THE HEALLING ARTS. John shared new work in a lecture entitled “Voice Energetics and the Five Elements”. Using the Five Elements of Ayuvedic Medicine, John has developed a system in which energy imbalances may be diagnosed and treated using the conversation voice. John gave examples of different elements in the voice and how these elements may be balanced for health and wellness.
May 1987 Barbara Hero “Exploring the Lambdoma Sounds”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, May l7th, l987 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Barbara Hero. Barbara is an artist, writer, musician and mathematician who, for the past 20 years, has been working with the Lambdoma Diagram, a Pythagorean formula for healing with sound. Her talk was on “Exploring the Lambdoma Sounds”. Barbara spoke on this diagram, using slides to illustrate the color coding and shape. She played the Lambdoma Chakra Meditation, designed to resonate the chakras, while using a laser and scanner system to create the shapes of the overtone series.
September 1987 Steven Schatz “The Fundamentals of Music and Imagery”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, September 27th, l987 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Steven Schatz, L.C.S.W. Steven is a licensed social worker, musician, composer and founding director of Synthesis Education Foundation in Boston. A pioneer practitioner of Music and Imagery for over 12 year, Steven has made important innovations in this field of psychotherapy. His presentation was entitled “The Fundamentals of Music and Imagery”. Steven focused on the eight steps of guiding a Music and Imagery session and discussed the inner process of unfoldment through use of music, imagination and guided imagery.
October l987 Mirtala Bentov “From Atom to Cosmos: The Vibratory Nature of Reality”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, October 25th, l987 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Mirtala Bentov. Mirtala is an accomplished sculptor, artist and lecturer. Wife of the late scientist, Itzhak Bentov (author of STALKING THE WILD PENDULUM and A COSMIC BOOK) Mirtala has been carrying on the work of her husband through reconstruction of his original lectures. Her lecture was entitled “From Atom to Cosmos: The Vibratory Nature of Reality”. She presented a holographic view of consciousness and the universe, giving insight into the relationship of sound, the self and all of creation. Mirtala used slides to illustrate this presentation of Itzhak Bentov’s theories and personal experiences.
November l987 Katie Marks, “Shamanic Sounds”
Our most recent NESH meeting took place on Sunday, November 22nd, l987 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Katie Marks, M.S.W. Katie is a transpersonal therpaist, counselor and singer, who incorporates the use of sound with knowledge of energy based therapies including Polarity, Gesalt and Bio-Energetics. Katie lives in Colorado, where she has a private practice. Her talk was entitled “Shamanic Sounds”. She explored sound as it has been used in shamanic traditions, to heal, induce trance states and expand consciousness. Her experiential presentation included chanting, vocal toning, shamanic music, sonic healing and guided journeys.
December 1987 Della Grigsby “Sound Spiral”
Our next NESH meeting took place on Sunday, December l3th, l987 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Della Grigsby. Della is a professional cellist and trained dancer, with a background in movement, music therapy and sound healing. Over the past three years, she has developed a relaxation program which has been used in a variety of institutional and professional settings, including Brockton V.A. Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital. Della’s presentation was “Sound Spiral”. It focused upon this unique program of Proprio-Ceptive Relaxation. Della discussed and demonstrated her work, which used the low pitch frequency of the cello, combined with breathing awareness and Jacobsonian relaxation techniques.
January 1988 John Beaulieu, Ph.D. “Tunings: An Experiential Journey into the Upper Overtone Series”
Our next NESH meeting took place on Sunday, January l7th, l988 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was John Beaulieu. John is a composer, pianist, music therapist, director of the Polarity Wellness Network and author of MUSIC AND SOUND IN THE HEALING ARTS. His presentation was entitled “Tunings: An Experiential Journey into the Upper Overtone Series”. John used a synthesizer he had programmed to play intervals created from the upper overtone series. He had the NESH group listen to and experience the sensations created from these frequencies, which he had programmed to play up to the 64th and 65th harmonic of an audible fundamental. These sounded like sounds of crickets or cicadas.
February 1988, 5th Anniversary – SHA Name Change
Our most recent meeting was a special networking party, celebrating our 5th Anniversary and our name change to SHA–Sound Healers Association. It took place on Sunday, February l4th, l988 in Allston. This name change reflected the global consciousness of sound and music as therapeutic tools.
March 1988 David Gonzales “The Art of Music Therapy: On Being a Musician Therapist”
Our most recent SHA meeting took place on Sunday, March 20th, l988 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was David Gonzales. David is a certified music therapist, multi-instrumentalist and storyteller. He is on the faculty of New York University and the Polarity Wellness School. His presentation was entitled “The Art of Music Therapy: On Being a Musician Therapist”. David focused on how the musician/therapist can create musical relationships through which clients contact the wellsprings of their own creative potential. The use of clinical improvisation was highlighted with the showing of video examples of actual cases.
April 1988 Don Campbell “How to Analyze and Compose Music for the Healing Arts”
Our most recent SHA meeting took place on Sunday, April l7th, l988 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Don Campbell. Don is the director of the Institute for Music, Health and Education. This summer, he will join the faculties of Naropa Institute and Boulder College to teach Music, Healing and the Psychology of Listening. He has released 8 albums and is the author of INTRODUCTION TO THE MUSICAL BRAIN. His presentation was an introductory lecture on “How to Analyze and Compose Music for the Healing Arts”. Using examples from several of his releases, including “Crystal Meditations”, “Runes” and “Cosmic Classics”, Don spoke on the compositional techniques he utilized for the creation of this music.

Our most recent SHA meeting took place on Friday, June 24th, l988 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Joanne Crandall. Joanne is a professional pianist and author of SELF- TRANSFORMATION THROUGH MUSIC, published by Quest books. Joanne’s work incorporates the empowerment of every person as a musician. Her presentation was entitled “Self-Knowing Through Silence”. It provided an experiential opportunity to focus on the use of silence and listening as tools for expanding our awareness of self and our interrelationship to the whole of humanity.
September 1988 Onye Onyemaechi “Sacred Rhythms and Healing”
Our most recent SHA meeting took place on Friday, September 23rd, l988 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Onye Onyemaechi. From the Ogbo tribe of Nigeria, Onye is the founder and director of the Igbote Performing Arts Center in the Boston area. As a teacher, performing artist and holistic practitioner, he works with the traditional cultural tools of dance and drum to create integration of the self. Onye’s presentation was “Sacred Rhythms and Healing”. It focused on ancient African rhythms and their use to induce altered states of consciousness. Onye demonstrated this shamanic work, using drum, dance and voice.
October l988 Michael Siegell, Ph.D. “The Psychological and Spiritual Dimensions of North Indian Classical Music”
Our most recent SHA meeting took place on Friday, October 2lst, l988 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Michael Siegell, Ph.D. Michael is an assistant professor at Lesley College, teaching Psychology and Music Therapy. A performing sitarist, Michael has lived in India as a Research Fellow of the American Institute of Indian Studies. Michael’s presentation was entitled “The Psychological and Spiritual Dimensions of North Indian Classical Music”. It was an exploration of the psycho- affective qualities of raga experience; how ragas are conceived and expressed in the improvisatory music of North India. Michael lectured to the group and concluded his presentation with a mini-recital on sitar.
November l988 Rhoda Beryl Semel “The Sounds of the Shekinah”
Our most recent SHA meeting took place on Friday, November 4th, l988 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Rhoda Beryl Semel presenting “The Sounds of the Shekinah”. From the New York City area, Rhoda is an author and teacher of the voice and music. She is on the faculty of the New School for Social Research. Rhoda focused on the power and ecstasy of Jewish chants and songs to invoke the creative energies of the Shekinah, the Divine Female.
December l988 Vickie Dodd “Achroma Kinetics: The Movement and Color of Sound”
Our most recent SHA meeting took place on Friday, December 9th, l988 in Allston. Our guest speaker for the evening was Vickie Dodd, presenting “Achroma Kinetics: The Movement and Color of Sound”. Vickie is a body worker, sound therapist and teacher from Chicago. Since childhood, she has had the ability to sense the tones of the human body. Vicki shared her vocal techniques of matching the body’s sounds to resonate and release trauma.
January 1989, Edith Hillman Boxhill “Music Therapy for Living”
On Friday, January l3th, l989, our guest speaker for the evening was Edith Hillman Boxhill presenting “Music Therapy for Living”. Edith is an internationally known music therapist, author of MUSIC THERAPY FOR THE DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED and editor of “Music Therapy”, the Journal of the AAMT. She spoke on her music therapy work and on an organization she had founded, called Music Therapists for Peace. Edith used slides, recorded sessions and video tapes to illustrate her work with the developmentally disabled.
February 1989, “7th Anniversary of the Sound Healers”
On Friday, February l0th, l989, Sarah Benson hosted “The 7th Anniversary of the Sound Healers” in Allston.
March 1989, Jonathan Goldman, “Sonic Entrainment and the Brain”
On Friday, March 3rd, l989, our guest speaker in Allston was me, Jonathan Goldman, presenting “Sonic Entrainment and the Brain”. I drew from material found in AWAKENING THE LOST CHORD and from techniques utilized on Spirit Music releases such as “Crystal Resonance” to explore entrainment and its role in the sonic therapies. I discussed how this phenomenon is being used in science to induce altered states of consciousness and related how ancient shamanic traditions have utilized entrainment principles of sound to heal and transform.
April 1989 Barbara Hero “The Shapes of Sounds”
On Friday, April l4th, 1989 in Allston, our guest speaker was Barbara Hero presenting “The Shapes of Sounds”. Barbara is an artist, writer, musician and mathematician who, for the past 20 years, has been working with the Lambdoma Diagram, A Pythagorean formula for healing with sound. Using an electronic keyboard and laser-scanner system, she demonstrated the shapes created by different intervals and different musical voices. Barbara played a musical composition based upon the dimensions of the Grand Gallery in the Pyramid of Giza.
May 1989 Kay Gardner “The Healing Power of Modal Music”
On Friday, May l2th, 1989 in Allston, our guest speaker was Kay Gardner presenting “The Healing Power of Modal Music”. Kay is a composer, performer, researcher and creator of “A Rainbow Path” which combines theories of Pythagorean and Hindu traditions into a major work coordinating sound and color for healing. Kay discussed the relationship between modal music and healing, demonstrating that the dissolution of modal melody paralleled the disuse of music as a healing power. She also spoke about the application of sacred geometry to the creation of music, premiering a new piece called “Viriditas”, based upon the Fibonacci series and the ratio Phi (.6l8) to be used with terminally ill populations.
This last meeting on May 12, 1989 with Kay represented the final SHA meeting in Allston, with myself as the host for these presentations. Soon after, I moved out to the Boulder Colorado area. The meetings continued briefly in Boulder. Then they ceased. Other sound healing energy forms began to emerge including The School of Sound, the Healing Sounds Intensives, Correspondence Courses, Seminars and many other vehicles for helping spread the understanding of how sound and music may be used as transformational and healing tools. In a way, these meetings from 1982 – 1989 represented on these pages constitute an era—one, which I am grateful and privileged to have been a part of.
I would like to thank everyone, who engaged in support of the Sound Healers Association and was a part of the extraordinary experience that manifested through these meetings. We are still continuing this joyous work, and the energy of the Sound Healers Association continues to manifest and grow!
