In August of 1989, hundreds of thousands of people all over the planet joined hands in meditation circles, chanting OM in a heartfelt cry for peace. Most people have heard the toning of the syllable OM, which is believed to create an energy of harmony and at-one-ness. Regardless of their religious training, people tend to move into an alpha state and experience a quiet centeredness when OM is toned repeatedly.
Known as the Harmonic Convergence, and scheduled to occur at an astrologically and numerological propitious time, it was hoped that this simple gesture would contribute to would peace. Could it be that the profound and virtually miraculous changes that have taken place in Russia and Germany occurred in direct response to this worldwide call for peace?
Let us examine how sound might be used for planetary healing. It is my belief that sound precedes form. Sound can create or recreate form. And sound can dissolve form. Let me elaborate.
Sound precedes form.
We begin as thoughts "in the mind of God." In this sense, I interpret "word" to mean a combination of intentionality and sound. We create our own reality. "Word" or sound is the vibration that is the bridge between the manifest and the unmanifest worlds.
In order to bring something into manifestation, we must first conceive of it, and them give it vibration. The easiest way to give it vibration is by making a sound-or by "naming" it.
The great Sufi mystic and musician, Hazrat Inayat Khan, wrote in The Mysticism of Music Sound and Word, "Every vowel has its psychological significance, and the composition of every word has a chemical and psychological significance."
Sound can create or recreate form.
The experiments of Hans Jenny a Swiss scientist, demonstrate vividly that when inorganic matter such as sand, paste and plastic is placed on steel plates and bombarded with harmonic sound it causes these materials to undulate and form into perfect geometric patterns. He was able to produce the form of a perfect circle, of cells-the lifeless matter could even be seen undergoing changes that were an exact replication of cell mitosis! Even the shape of the spine could be replicated when bombarded with specific harmonic frequencies. This work is demonstrated on a video called Cymatics and is described in Jenny's book of the same title. Cymatics is the study of wave form phenomena.
Sound can dissolve form.
In the above example, when the sound stops, the pattern dissolves into blobs.
Discoveries by Royal Rife in the 1930s showed that every cell has its own vibratory frequency, and every cell within a specific organ system has a similar vibratory resonance. He is best known for the amazing Rife microscope, now in the Smithsonian Institute, which magnifies living cells at the power of 100,000. While observing the internal workings of a living human cell, Rife took a Ray-O-Vac tube and a frequency generator and charged the cells with different frequencies until he found a resonance that would explode the cells.
So if there was cancer of the breast, for example, he could take a biopsy and put it under the microscope and then observe the cells while he amped up his frequency generator until the cells exploded. Once he determined which frequencies was required to obliterate the malignant cells, he would put the person next to the Ray-O-Vac tube, direct it to the breast, and eliminate the cancer cells without affecting the rest of the breast of the rest of the body.
Now that we have established respect for both the organizational creative aspects of sound and for the disorganizational destructive powers of sound, let us explore how this powerful tool might be used for planetary healing.
What would be the clearest and purest intent that we might project upon the planet? The Dalai Lama once remarked that the essence of his teachings was simply to "be kind." A bumper sticker that is becoming very popular across America is, "Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty." Craig Carpenter, a messenger for the Hopi and various other traditional religious leaders, has observed a common thread that runs through the fabric of every original religion. In essence, it is: be kind. Here are some examples:
Old Testment: "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself . . ." (Lev. 19:18.)
Jesus Christ: "All things whatsoever ye would that men should do you, do ye even so to them; for this is the law and the Prophets." (Matt. 7:12.)
Buddha: "One should seek for others the happiness one desires for one's self." "Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful."
Hillel: (Haasidic Judaism) quoting the Old Testament: "Whatsoever you do not wish your neighbor to do to you, do not unto him," and "What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow men." That is the entire law; all the rest is commentary.
Hinduism: "The true rule is to do by the things of others as you do by your own."
Hopi: "Live, be happy and feed the children."
Din-neh: (Navajo): "Help anybody."
Australian Aborigine: "If you do hurt someone, you hurt self. If you help someone you help self. Blood and bone is in all people."
So think about it for a minute. If we had the intentionality to live by the Golden Rule, wouldn't that make a profound difference upon every act we performed, upon how we lived every day, in every way? When we practice loving kindness, we create the predisposition for good health and happiness.
Let us being by using sound to amplify kindness, as a form of planetary healing. If we follow the tenets of all the great religions and practice loving kindness, combining it with sound healing, it might look like this:
How to Tone for Kindness
Example: You're in line at the supermarket and the woman in front of you is yelling at her kid, and yanking him by the ear. You have a sick feeling in your gut. You open up your mouth and let a sound come out. You do it quietly, so only the people nearby can hear. It's a whimpering sound. The angry woman disdainfully pretends not to hear. But the boy looks up and meets your sympathetic eyes, and smiles. Deep in his heart he know s that another human being cares about him. It is just a small incident, but mysteriously, he remembers it warmly for the rest of his life.
Example: Your fiend is telling you about how her husband beat up on her. Your heart aches for her. Instead of trying to say something comforting, you go into your heart and feel your feelings, and then you let those feelings come out of your mouth in sound. You hold her eyes with yours, and you allow her to see your pain, your empathy, your caring. Tears come to her eyes as she gets it-truly, deeply-that your really do care about her, and in your own way you do understand something about what she is going through. This is a profound moment in which your friendship takes a giant leap forward, because the basic human need for human kindness has been met.
You may protest that if you lived your life this way, it would turn into a veritable musical opera. Perhaps there is a reason for the popularity of operettas? Songs can express emotions far more effectively than mere words. I believe it is the words that belittle the emotions. Vocal sounding without words (as every child and every woman knows) can be far more effective in expressing one's gut-level feelings-and getting a response!-than all the words in the world.
